SUMMARY:Reclaiming Death - Art | Ritual | Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Ma’s House is pleased to present Reclaiming Death — Art | Ritual | Advocacy\, a group exhibition featuring 20 artists expressing personal and cultural connections to end-of-life practices. The exhibition will run from Sunday\, February 22—Sunday\, May 16\, 2026. \nDeath is one of life’s few universal experiences. As long as people are born\, people will die. And as long as people have died\, artists have played an integral role in creating cultural death practices. Our collective relationship to death and dying is inextricably tied to our humanity and mending that relationship directly impacts all we experience in life. “Reclaiming Death” is an ongoing pursuit of this mending which requires the communal effort of every participating artist and their unique approach to deathwork. \nNow in its 2nd iteration\, “Reclaiming Death” began as a research project by artist\, death doula\, and Ma’s House Director of Curation\, Brianna L. Hernández as part of Hyperallergic’s Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators. The series of online articles grew into an in-person exhibition at Ma’s House in 2024\, and most recently hosted an open call for the 2nd show and a printed publication\, available online and in-gallery.

DESCRIPTION:A monthly peer-led Zoom group for people who had a strained relationship with someone who’s died. It can be tough to be in a group with other folks who were close with their parent\, sibling\, grandparent\, partner\, co-parent\, friend\, etc. As much as I like for there to be a range of experiences represented in grief groups\, so that we can hear diverse perspectives\, sometimes it is nice to be with people who “get it.” When addiction\, mental health challenges\, conflict\, estrangement\, abuse\, etc. were a part of the picture\, it can affect the grief journey in unique ways. This is a space for us.

In 2019 Adrianna’s coworker Roberta asked if she wanted to go to Disneyland and South Korea to celebrate getting off chemo for stage four breast cancer; Roberta had a year to live and wanted a companion to get through her bucketlist and of course Adrianna said yes and embraced being a Death Doula for her friend. Holding liminal space and being comfortable in the discomfort has led Adrianna to become a hospice volunteer and grief counselor. She is currently in a fast-tracked Bachelor’s of Social Work to become a grief therapist to complement all the training she has done as a death worker. I know there is for me. It’s a both-and/two truths situation. Many of us make this choice for a lot of unfortunate\, depressing\, and/or systemic reasons\, and I created this space where we can be with our truths\, and hurts\, around it all. \nOur monthly peer-led Zoom group is intended to be a space for people who have chosen not to have children. It is not intended to be a child-loss support group or infertility support group\, although if you have prior experience with infertility and/or pregnancy loss and have since decided to not have children (meaning you are now childfree by choice) feel free to join and see if it’s a good fit.

DESCRIPTION:This is a monthly offering\, happening on the second Tuesday of every month. This offering is designed to support somatically moving our shared and personal grief.\nWe begin to build our container through brief sharing and connecting and then move into movement\, vocalizing\, wailing\, praying\, and drumming. Queer and trans people often carry grief from non-death losses—family estrangement\, identity erasure\, loss of community\, housing\, or health. \nThis session explores disenfranchised grief and collective mourning\, offering space to name\, witness\, and begin to heal these often-invisible losses. \nWe’ll also touch on grief in response to social and political violence\, and how we can create rituals for communal mourning and resilience.

DESCRIPTION:A monthly peer-led Zoom group for people who had a strained relationship with someone who’s died. It can be tough to be in a group with other folks who were close with their parent\, sibling\, grandparent\, partner\, co-parent\, friend\, etc. As much as I like for there to be a range of experiences represented in grief groups\, so that we can hear diverse perspectives\, sometimes it is nice to be with people who “get it.” When addiction\, mental health challenges\, conflict\, estrangement\, abuse\, etc. were a part of the picture\, it can affect the grief journey in unique ways. This is a space for us.

DESCRIPTION:It’s not a given that everyone who is childfree by choice is 100%\, unabashedly content with the decision. While we may be set in our choice\, there can still be grief there. I know there is for me. It’s a both-and/two truths situation. Many of us make this choice for a lot of unfortunate\, depressing\, and/or systemic reasons\, and I created this space where we can be with our truths\, and hurts\, around it all. \nOur monthly peer-led Zoom group is intended to be a space for people who have chosen not to have children. It is not intended to be a child-loss support group or infertility support group\, although if you have prior experience with infertility and/or pregnancy loss and have since decided to not have children (meaning you are now childfree by choice) feel free to join and see if it’s a good fit.
