SUMMARY:Death Café - Ybor
DESCRIPTION:A Death Café is a warm\, welcoming gathering where people—often strangers—come together to talk openly about death\, dying\, and the meaning of life. \nThere’s no agenda\, no selling\, and no judgment—just real conversations over tea\, coffee\, and usually a bit of cake. It’s not a grief support group or a therapy session\, but a space for curiosity\, reflection\, and connection. \nBy talking about death\, we often discover how we want to live more fully. At its heart\, a Death Café is about breaking the silence and creating a community where life’s hardest topic becomes a source of shared understanding and purpose.

SUMMARY:Bound By Loss Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:Bound By Loss is a thoughtfully facilitated book circle for those navigating loss who feel ready to engage with their grief through reading\, reflection\, and discussion. This circle will provide a supportive\, non-pathologizing space to explore grief-related literature — offering insight\, validation\, and connection outside the structure of formal therapy and with a return to community in mind. \nEach month\, we’ll read and discuss a selected book\, ranging from memoirs and personal narratives to research-based explorations of grief\, loss\, and meaning-making. Conversations will be facilitated with care\, fostering curiosity\, self-reflection\, and shared experiences. While this is not a therapy group\, some may find it therapeutic — offering companionship in the grief journey through literature\, connection\, and meaningful discussion. \nThis space is open to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of grief\, whether processing personal loss\, supporting others\, or exploring the ways grief shapes our lives. Participation is flexible; you are welcome to engage as much or as little as feels right\, whether by sharing reflections or simply listening. \nCome as you are\, bring your questions\, thoughts\, and an open heart. Grief is lighter when we don’t carry it alone. \n📖 First Meeting: May 8th\, 6–8 PM\n📚 First Book: Briefly Perfectly Human by Alua Arthur \nThis group will meet via Google Meet. No download is required to join. Auto-generated captions will be available\, and I am open to discussing alternative accessibility options as needed. While cameras on is preferred (because we wanna see your beautiful face)\, no one will be required to do so. \nPlease note that listening to audio books is reading in this group. Braille is reading in this group.

SUMMARY:The Last Stitch Society
DESCRIPTION:The Last Stitch Society creates space for the conversations many of us crave but rarely find—about mortality\, grief\, loss\, and how we might live more fully by acknowledging life’s impermanence. \nBring any portable craft project—knitting\, embroidery\, mending\, sketching—and join us as we stitch and share. No experience necessary\, just an openness to authentic connection. Light refreshments provided to nourish both body and conversation. \nIn a culture that often pushes difficult topics into the shadows\, Last Stitch Society offers a warm\, welcoming environment to explore the full spectrum of human experience. SUMMARY:TalkDeath Book Club: “From the Ashes: Grief and Revolution in a World on Fire” by Sarah Jaffe
DESCRIPTION:TalkDeath’s next book club read will be “From the Ashes: Grief and Revolution in a World on Fire” by Sarah Jaffe\n\n🔥We are joyed to share that the generous folks at AK Press are very kindly offering our book club members a 30% discount if they order their copy through AK Press 🔥\n\n“Our era is one of significant and substantial loss\, yet we barely have time to acknowledge it. The losses range from the personal grief of a single COVID death to the planetary disaster wrought by climate change. We are in an age of unraveling hopes and expectations\, of dreams curtailed\, of aspirations desiccated. What can we do? This is capitalism’s death phase. It has become clear that the cost of wealth creation for a few is enormous destruction for others. The marginalized and the vulnerable have been feeling the crisis for a long time\, but it is increasingly coming for all of us. At the same time\, we are denied the means of mourning the futures that are being so brutally curtailed. \n\nAt such a moment\, taking the time to grieve is a radical act. Through in-depth reporting intertwined with memoir\, Sarah Jaffe (author of Work Won’t Love You Back) shows how public memorialization has become more than a refusal or a protest: it is a path to imagining a better world. When we are able to mourn the lives\, the homes\, the worlds we have lost\, we are better prepared to fight for a transformed future.”\n\n💀All new signups will be sent a welcome email with a link to join our Discord\, the discount code\, and more within 2-3 business days Monday through Friday. SUMMARY:Dead parents club: a virtual grief circle
DESCRIPTION:Losing a parent changes you. It’s weird\, it’s heavy\, it’s lonely — and a lot of people don’t know how to talk about it.\nDead Parents Club is a virtual grief circle for anyone navigating life after the loss of a parent (or parents). This is a space where you don’t have to sugarcoat it. No one’s going to rush you\, try to fix you\, or flinch when you talk about the hard stuff.\nWe’ll begin with a short grounding — a few moments to connect with your body and breath — and then we’ll open the circle. The rest of the 90 minutes are yours: to share\, to listen\, to cry\, to sit in silence. Whatever you need. There’s no pressure to speak\, and no need to perform your grief in any particular way.\nThis space is about showing up as you are. Whether your loss is new or decades old\, whether you’re feeling raw\, numb\, angry\, relieved\, or all of it at once — you’re welcome here. Though if your grief is still very fresh and raw\, know that this isn’t a support group in the clinical sense.\n🖤 Bring:\n– Tea\, a notebook\, a candle\, or just yourself\n– Your grief\, however it shows up that day\n– A willingness to be in the room\nWe don’t have answers. We’re not here to fix anything. Grief needs space to breathe — without judgment\, without rush. That’s what we’re offering.\ne-mail hello@yourmorbidfriends.com if cost is a barrier

SUMMARY:Silent Book Club of Death NY
DESCRIPTION:Do you like book clubs\, but prefer to choose your own book? Want to reflect on your mortality in the company of polite bookworms? \nCome read and mingle with new\, bookish friends at Silent Book Club of Death! Bring whatever book you happen to be reading—related to the themes of death\, grief\, loss\, aging\, or mortality—to read in companionable silence\, then share about it with your fellow attendees. You can bring your own book\, or borrow one from our library. \nPrice: Free\, registration required at: https://www.green-wood.com/event/silent-book-club-of-death-3/ \nThere have been over a dozen Silent Book Club of Death chapters and pop up events globally. Green-Wood is proud to serve as one of the New York chapter venues. \nWe’ll be joined by the founder of the first chapter\, Catherine of Death Project Manager\, who will present on the importance of end-of-life planning\, share key tips to getting organized\, and opine on logistics as an act of love and care. She will answer questions on designing your own death education event and share work she’s done globally and multilingually to create death-aware programming. \nWe will mingle before setting the timer to read\, and once the hour’s up\, death doula and illustrator Lauren Seeley will lead a group discussion on these universal\, yet challenging topics. \nLauren Seeley is a death and grief doula for pets and humans. As a death educator\, she focuses on death literacy\, end-of-life preparation\, spirituality\, and energy and intuitive work in death and grief spaces. She is the sole facilitator of The Silent Book Club of Death’s NYC chapter and a curator of funerals\, altars and memorial spaces. Seeley resides in Brooklyn\, NY\, where she also works at a funeral home. \n*Participation in discussion is entirely optional—you can engage as much or as little as you feel comfortable. \nFree. Registration required. Please consider a $10 donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer more death education programs like this throughout the year.

Mortem offers a forum to learn about human and non-human death practices directly from international end of life and death care professionals\, historians\, funeral industry workers\, biologists\, green burial advocates and artists on a range of death related topics and several short one on one meetings with artists who make work about death around the world. \nThis research fellowship supports artists while they explore and develop their identities as death-curious artists\, address extinction and environmental grief\, and develop new creative ways to acknowledge mortality and to renegotiate our relationships with the dead.\nAccepting applications until May 25th

SUMMARY:A Living Funeral Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:A Living Funeral Ceremony is an immersive meditative experience that encourages participants to face their own mortality. Through engaging in ritual and guidance through a death visualization–contemplating your own memorial as you imagine letting go of your earthly self–participants are invited to “die before you die\, to live while you’re alive.” \nThis ceremonial experience provides a safe and supportive space to confront fears around death and impermanence\, while also fostering a deeper connection to life’s fragility and beauty. Often compared to the experience of ego death\, this ritual leaves many with a renewed sense of purpose and a profound appreciation for the present moment. \nIn honor of the season\, Rosemary will serve as a plant ally\, offering its grounding and clarifying properties to support participants throughout this transformative experience. \nTiming:\nPlease arrive on time by 7pm\, as the doors will close once the ceremony begins to honor the sacred environment we are co-creating. The ritual portion takes up to 90 minutes. After the ceremony is complete\, Kaitlyn will hold space for participants to reflect alone or in community\, sip tea\, and gently reintegrate until 10pm. \nWhat to bring:\nA yoga mat\, or something to lay on\n(optional) A blanket for covering during the meditation \nWhat to wear:\nComfortable\, breathable clothing is recommended. \nThis ceremony will be led by Kaitlyn Pietras (she/her)\, a queer Jewish grief worker\, herbalist\, and visual artist. Kaitlyn is passionate about tending to personal and communal grief\, connecting with her ancestors\, and serving the LGBTQIA+ community. She has a deep love for plant magic + Jewish mysticism. Kaitlyn trained directly with Emily Cross of Steady Waves Center who originally created this ceremony inspired by living funerals first conducted in South Korea in an effort to prevent suicides by helping people to see the value of their lives.
