SUMMARY:Why is Grief A Lonely Experience? An Exploration of the Systems That Create Isolation in Grief
DESCRIPTION:Grief is often framed as a solitary emotional experience\, yet its course is decisively charted by larger\, systemic forces. In this compelling presentation\, Dr. Elreacy Dock will examine the often-invisible social\, cultural\, economic\, and political factors that influence how we experience and process loss. Grounding the discussion in the conceptual framework of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)\, this session will methodically analyze how societal structures create vastly different landscapes for grief and mourning. We will deconstruct how these systems can either validate and support grief or marginalize and complicate it.

SUMMARY:A Book Tour of Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:Join authors Beth Winegarner\, Loren Rhoads\, and Amy Shea at the beautiful grounds of the San Francisco Columbarium\, as they delve into the rich\, often overlooked world of cemeteries and burial grounds\, exploring how these spaces tell the stories of communities\, culture\, and history. From personal reflections to historical investigations\, these writers shed light on the lives of the dead—and what they reveal about the living. Together\, these authors offer a compelling conversation about death\, memory\, erasure\, and the power of writing to preserve the stories found in places most people overlook. \nBooks will be for sale by Green Apple Books.

SUMMARY:Friends Missing Friends: A Gathering for Friend-Loss Grievers
DESCRIPTION:Are you grieving the death of a friend? Do you want to meet and gather with people who GET it? Friend-loss grief is isolating because it’s disenfranchised\, and there are very few resources available. We shouldn’t have to do this alone. Let’s honor our friends\, talk about our grief\, and find comfort in community.

SUMMARY:"It's Complicated" Support Group
DESCRIPTION:A monthly peer-led Zoom group for people who had a strained relationship with someone who’s died. It can be tough to be in a group with other folks who were close with their parent\, sibling\, grandparent\, partner\, co-parent\, friend\, etc. As much as I like for there to be a range of experiences represented in grief groups\, so that we can hear diverse perspectives\, sometimes it is nice to be with people who “get it.” When addiction\, mental health challenges\, conflict\, estrangement\, abuse\, etc. were a part of the picture\, it can affect the grief journey in unique ways. This is a space for us.

SUMMARY:Grief Walks
DESCRIPTION:FREE TO ATTEND\nThursdays in October 2025\n6PM – 7PM\nRiverdale Park East – meet at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse\n450 Broadview Ave\, Toronto\, ON M4K 2N1\nClosest transit stop: Broadview Ave at Langley Ave-Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital \nJoin Death Doula & Soul Companion\, Adrianna Prosser aka Lady Death Doula\, for an hour long walk with grief\n*in partnership with InTO the Ravines – a Park People and City of Toronto supported event\nAutumn is a season when we embrace death and dying as we watch the leaves turn and the weather change\, and Mother Nature shows us how to die with grace. Each week learn about metabolizing your grief and how sound\, movement\, community\, and storytelling can alleviate symptoms and build capacity for holding your grief. In the final week we will learn about legacy and build a pop-up community memorial together. Come to share your grief aloud\, or come to be quiet and listen to the trees and be with others who understand where you are at in your grief journey. \nOctober 2nd: Storytelling – You are invited to bring a picture of the person\, place\, pet\, or anything that you are grieving. As we walk let’s share who or what they were to us. \nOctober 9: Movement – You are invited to walk in silence\, walk’n’talk\, listen to your earphones… as we walk together holding space for us and allow the trees help us metabolize our grief through shinrin yoku or “forest bathing”. Special guest James Johnson of Reiki with James \nOctober 16: Sound – You are invited to share a song that reminds you of your person\, place\, pet or anything that you are grieving. If you bring a bluetooth capable device to share it with\, a speaker will be made available for us all to hear your song. \nOctober 23: Community – As we walk through our grief\, you are invited to share who or what you have lost and find others in our group to walk with. Walk together even if you walk in silence\, walk’n’talk\, or walk with the trees holding space for your grief. Community helps us reflect and integrate our grief so we do not feel so alone within it. \nOctober 30: Legacy – As we walk through our grief\, you are invited to share how your grief metabolizes into acts of mourning\, ritual\, or legacy projects – things you do now as an act of love for your person\, place\, pet\, or anything you are grieving now. We will create a communal pop-up memorial together. \nThis is a peer-led community walk in public space. Please dress appropriately for the weather\, bring water\, and participate at your own comfort and risk. \nLook for new Griefy Giveaways each week to the first ten people who attend: \nWeek 1: First 10 people will RECEIVE a paperback copy of Aly Bird’s “Grief Ally” an empowering guide gives you solid step-by-step advice on how to support the grief journey \nWeek 2 + 3: First 10 people will RECEIVE an enamel “I am Grieving” pin by Canadian creator Margaux Wosk \nWeek 4: First 10 people will RECEIVE a mini 2×3 frame to start their home memorial to remember their decedent.

SUMMARY:NHFA September 2025 Webinar: Creating Meaningful Rituals for Families After Cremation
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 30th at 8 pm ET for an informative webinar that explores how end-of-life professionals can guide families in creating meaningful post-cremation rituals that honor both memory and place. We’ll discuss cultural and historical approaches to scattering\, practical considerations for helping families choose the right setting\, and creative ways to weave ritual into everyday landscapes. \nAs a case study\, we’ll look at Farmstead Scattering Garden—a fourth-generation working farm that has become a sacred space for scattering cremains by mail. Amy Bridger co-founded Farmstead Scattering Garden with her husband\, John\, on his family’s fourth-generation working cattle farm in northwestern Pennsylvania\, where they live with their two teenage children. \nParticipants will leave with practical tools\, inspiring examples\, and resources to help families move beyond cremation toward meaningful acts of remembrance.

SUMMARY:Eating Our Feelings: A Book Club for Readers and Grievers
DESCRIPTION:Love reading? Love eating? Morbidly curious\, or curiously morbid?Join us for the launch of Eating Our Feelings\, a book club for readers and grievers. We will meet on Sunday\, September 28 at Mr Cookbop in New Haven CT from 1 – 2:30PM. \nHere’s how it works: we all read the same book\, then share food based on what we read. You don’t need to have finished the book\, but we would love for you to come ready to share food and thoughts. \nWe will bring: a spirit of kind inquiry and light facilitation. \nPlease note that most dishes at this restaurant aren’t vegetarian or vegan – make sure to check the menu online before RSVP’ing. \nDonation of $5 will go towards organizing future events. \nThe organizers are Becca and Kate of Connecticut Death Collective and Catherine of Death Project Manager – deathworkers who enjoy hosting events centering spaces to discuss the taboo in community. \nMore info and RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/eating-our-feelings-a-book-club-for-readers-and-grievers-tickets-1578199560369

SUMMARY:Art as a Mirror: Exploring Grief at the Met Museum
DESCRIPTION:Throughout human history\, art has played an important role in the ways that we memorialize loved ones in death and express our grief. Join us at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a meaningful exploration of how art can illuminate and validate our personal experiences with loss. Led by creative grief professional\, Melanie Wilson\, and arts educator\, Deborah Chi\, this intimate group gathering will invite participants to view and discuss several carefully selected works of art that speak to different aspects of the mourning process. Through reflective exercises and thoughtful conversation\, participants will have the opportunity to explore their own grief and feelings around dying\, using art as a catalyst for deeper understanding. This engaging experience encourages processing and dialogue as we reflect on how these artistic expressions might resonate with our own journeys through grief\, creating space for both individual contemplation and shared understanding.\nPlease note: This is an interactive experience where participants are invited to share thoughts and feelings. We understand that some people prefer to process quietly while others find healing through verbal expression—both approaches are welcome and honored in our group.\nThis tour is available in English only\, and will require some mobility as we will be touring across two floors of the museum.\nGroup is limited to 15 people. Ticket purchase includes the tour and general admission to the museum.\nThis event is presented by Life and Soul as part of our Death of the Party event series.

SUMMARY:Why California Needs a Conservation Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Our Bodies Are Designed to Return to the Earth 🌿\nJoin our Zoom to learn what a Conservation Cemetery is… permanently protected natural land where burials restore habitat. We’ll take a deep dive into how a conservation cemetery differs from modern burial practices\, and how it compares to green burial. \nHere in California\, we’re a community that thrives outdoors! From beaches to deserts to mountains\, yet when it comes to our final rest\, our options are far removed from the natural rhythms that reflect our lifestyle. Modern burial practices – concrete vaults\, metal caskets\, and toxic embalming chemicals – lock our bodies away from the very process we were designed for: to decompose naturally and nourish the earth. Instead of restoring the land\, these practices harm it. \nIt doesn’t have to be this way.\nA Conservation Cemetery is more than green burial. It’s a way of restoring land\, protecting wildlife\, and ensuring our final act on earth is one of renewal\, not depletion.\nJoin us for this community gathering to: \nLearn how conservation cemeteries differ from standard and green cemeteries.\nExplore how our end-of-life choices can heal the planet.\nBe part of the growing movement urging California lawmakers to cut the red tape and make these options available here at home.\nLet’s be honest… there isn’t a lot of transparency within our current funeral industry\, we want to change that! Join us for real conversation about our common burial practices and gain an understanding about how harmful they are not only to our bodies\, but to the planet – and learn about greener options that may impact your end-of-life decision making. \nQuestions? hello@dodeathdifferent.com\nInstagram @thedeathnetwork\nWebsite www.TheDeathNetwork.com \nWe can’t wait to see you!

The grief potion is not required to attend\, however if you’d like to receive a discounted potion in time for this gathering\, please RSVP by September 15!

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Oakland\, CA - Too Poor to Die
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7:00 PM as we welcome author Amy Shea for a conversation about her new book\, Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins. \nWe will be selling the book at the event\, or you can order a copy at https://ggpbooks.com/book/9781978843981. \nWe hope to see you there! \nDescription\nDeath is the great equalizer\, but not all deaths are created equal. \nToo Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins\, a collection of closely connected essays\, takes the reader on a journey into what happens to those who die while experiencing homelessness or who end up indigent or unclaimed at the end of life. Too Poor to Die bears witness to the disparities in death and dying faced by some of society’s most vulnerable and marginalized and asks the reader to consider their own end-of-life and disposition plans within the larger context of how privilege and access plays a role in what we want versus what we get in death.

SUMMARY:Sick & Tired: A Virtual Discussion on Chronic Illness and Grief
DESCRIPTION:Sick and tired of being sick and tired? \nUs too. \nJoin death doula Jamie Thrower\, Lisa Pahl of The Death Deck\, and Catherine of Death Project Manager for a discussion on chronic illness and grief. \nThis is the second event in our Sick and Tired series. \nThis time\, we’re talking about caregiving while sick: what does it mean to give and receive care? How can you show up for others sicker than yourself\, while making space for your own needs and grief? What does deathwork look like\, when you’re chronically ill? \nWe’ll open with a grounding exercise\, then create space for your thoughts on chronic illness\, grief\, burnout\, and death / aging / mortality / the many ways our bodies can fail and surprise us. \nBring your grief\, bring your rage\, bring your messy humanity. \nWe’ll be there to meet you. \nMore information and RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sick-tired-a-virtual-discussion-on-chronic-illness-and-grief-tickets-1588167404459
