SUMMARY:Radical Mindfulness: Why Transforming Fear of Death is Politically Vital book club
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in how the existential fear of death shapes society? Do you wonder how we can address injustice? Join our weekly online reading group\, Radical Mindfulness\, to explore how mindfulness can serve as a powerful tool for political transformation. Together\, we’ll build a supportive community of care and reflection. Whether you’re seeking connection\, inspiration\, or fresh perspectives\, this space offers an opportunity to learn and grow in solidarity. We meet via Zoom on Sundays. Recordings will be shared after each gathering. \n-Sundays 6:30 to 8pm ET beginning September 14th\n-Free to attend\n-Free PDF of the book from author\, James Rowe\n-Physical copy offered with a 30% discount from Routledge \nThis weekly reading and discussion of Radical Mindfulness will explore the causes of injustice and how to achieve social transformation. Drawing from scholarly literature\, the author suggests the existential fear of death is at the root of oppression\, and that meditation and ritual can be pathways to structural change. \nThis will be different from most book clubs. There is no homework; each week we pick up where we left off and read together. We will pause for questions\, reflections\, clarifications\, as ways to engage the material. We look forward to creating a community of both practice and curiosity. (We estimate 6 months of reading together!)

SUMMARY:Grief Walks
DESCRIPTION:FREE TO ATTEND\nThursdays in October 2025\n6PM – 7PM\nRiverdale Park East – meet at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse\n450 Broadview Ave\, Toronto\, ON M4K 2N1\nClosest transit stop: Broadview Ave at Langley Ave-Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital \nJoin Death Doula & Soul Companion\, Adrianna Prosser aka Lady Death Doula\, for an hour long walk with grief\n*in partnership with InTO the Ravines – a Park People and City of Toronto supported event\nAutumn is a season when we embrace death and dying as we watch the leaves turn and the weather change\, and Mother Nature shows us how to die with grace. Each week learn about metabolizing your grief and how sound\, movement\, community\, and storytelling can alleviate symptoms and build capacity for holding your grief. In the final week we will learn about legacy and build a pop-up community memorial together. Come to share your grief aloud\, or come to be quiet and listen to the trees and be with others who understand where you are at in your grief journey. \nOctober 2nd: Storytelling – You are invited to bring a picture of the person\, place\, pet\, or anything that you are grieving. As we walk let’s share who or what they were to us. \nOctober 9: Movement – You are invited to walk in silence\, walk’n’talk\, listen to your earphones… as we walk together holding space for us and allow the trees help us metabolize our grief through shinrin yoku or “forest bathing”. Special guest James Johnson of Reiki with James \nOctober 16: Sound – You are invited to share a song that reminds you of your person\, place\, pet or anything that you are grieving. If you bring a bluetooth capable device to share it with\, a speaker will be made available for us all to hear your song. \nOctober 23: Community – As we walk through our grief\, you are invited to share who or what you have lost and find others in our group to walk with. Walk together even if you walk in silence\, walk’n’talk\, or walk with the trees holding space for your grief. Community helps us reflect and integrate our grief so we do not feel so alone within it. \nOctober 30: Legacy – As we walk through our grief\, you are invited to share how your grief metabolizes into acts of mourning\, ritual\, or legacy projects – things you do now as an act of love for your person\, place\, pet\, or anything you are grieving now. We will create a communal pop-up memorial together. \nThis is a peer-led community walk in public space. Please dress appropriately for the weather\, bring water\, and participate at your own comfort and risk. \nLook for new Griefy Giveaways each week to the first ten people who attend: \nWeek 1: First 10 people will RECEIVE a paperback copy of Aly Bird’s “Grief Ally” an empowering guide gives you solid step-by-step advice on how to support the grief journey \nWeek 2 + 3: First 10 people will RECEIVE an enamel “I am Grieving” pin by Canadian creator Margaux Wosk \nWeek 4: First 10 people will RECEIVE a mini 2×3 frame to start their home memorial to remember their decedent.

SUMMARY:Friends Missing Friends: A Gathering for Friend-Loss Grievers
DESCRIPTION:Are you grieving the death of a friend? Do you want to meet and gather with people who GET it? Friend-loss grief is isolating because it’s disenfranchised\, and there are very few resources available. We shouldn’t have to do this alone. Let’s honor our friends\, talk about our grief\, and find comfort in community.

SUMMARY:Why is Grief A Lonely Experience? An Exploration of the Systems That Create Isolation in Grief
DESCRIPTION:Grief is often framed as a solitary emotional experience\, yet its course is decisively charted by larger\, systemic forces. In this compelling presentation\, Dr. Elreacy Dock will examine the often-invisible social\, cultural\, economic\, and political factors that influence how we experience and process loss. Grounding the discussion in the conceptual framework of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)\, this session will methodically analyze how societal structures create vastly different landscapes for grief and mourning. We will deconstruct how these systems can either validate and support grief or marginalize and complicate it.

SUMMARY:Childfree By Choice & Grieving
DESCRIPTION:It’s not a given that everyone who is childfree by choice is 100%\, unabashedly content with the decision. While we may be set in our choice\, there can still be grief there. I know there is for me. It’s a both-and/two truths situation. Many of us make this choice for a lot of unfortunate\, depressing\, and/or systemic reasons\, and I created this space where we can be with our truths\, and hurts\, around it all. \nOur monthly peer-led Zoom group is intended to be a space for people who have chosen not to have children. It is not intended to be a child-loss support group or infertility support group\, although if you have prior experience with infertility and/or pregnancy loss and have since decided to not have children (meaning you are now childfree by choice) feel free to join and see if it’s a good fit.

SUMMARY:Sexual Bereavement - Queer Death Salon
DESCRIPTION:Let’s gather and engage with our questions and feelings about: \nsex after the death of a loved one.\nthe disenfranchised grief of polyamorous and kinky relational loss.\nhow pleasure and erotic energy can support our mourning.\nchanges in desire as death approaches for ourselves or a loved one.\ncultural expectations of how a widow should act and our internalized stories about that.\nanything sex/pleasure and bereavement related. No question is too taboo. \nJess will invite folks to participate in embodiment exercises\, freewrite and consider the ways they want to be in relationship to their sexual expression within their (anticipatory) grief. \nJess DeVries is a queer somatic sex coach and grief worker. She primarily serves the queer/trans community supporting folks in reclaiming body autonomy and to inspire curiosity about pleasure and sexual expression\, guiding folks to define and pursue pleasure on their own terms. She is a grief advocate who regularly facilitates spaces for people to grieve\, inviting the wisdom of the body to guide the grief process. \nWithin the realms of grief\, she has trained with Being Here\, Human – as well as – Shauna Janz of Sacred Grief. Her grief work is held by connections to her ancestors\, mugwort\, hawthorne\, rose\, connection to her pussy\, and many many tears. Within the realms of pleasure and embodiment\, she has trained in Somatic Sex Education and Sexological Bodywork at the ISSSE – as well as – the Somatica Method with the Somatica Institute. Her pleasure work is held by delighting in sights\, smells\, and tastes\, a dirty imagination\, and sharing touch with human and non-human kin. \nJess provides 1:1 sessions online or by phone. She also facilitates workshops\, grief circles\, and rituals online for queer folks\, ex-Christians\, and Covid realist communities.

SUMMARY:Memento Mori: A Death Meditation and Living Funeral Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means “remember you must die.” Death is an inevitable part of life\, but society discourages us from confronting our own mortality. In this two-hour workshop\, join trauma-informed meditation teacher Leah Raidt and death doula Becky Robison to acknowledge—and even welcome—death’s presence in our everyday lives. \nWe’ll explore the individual dimensions of death by creating an altar of our own memento mori. We’ll examine the universal dimensions of death via meditation. And finally\, we’ll hold a living funeral ritual where participants can write their own eulogies and learn about burial shrouding—including what it feels like to be wrapped in a shroud. This exploratory\, experiential workshop is for adults of all ages who wish to become more comfortable with mortality. We especially encourage friends and loved ones to come together. Please bring a notebook\, a pen or pencil\, and a small object from your home or the natural world that reminds you of death. \nRegister on the Earth & Spirit Center website!

The virtual residency will involve daily live video lectures with international death care and funeral industry workers\, historians\, biologists and artists on a range of death related topics and several short one on one meetings with artists who make art about death around the world. Built in to the 2- 2.5 hours of daily programming are discussions\, recommended assignments and show and tell. The program is designed to give insight into death knowledge and ritual from a wide range of perspectives. \nBiophilium death residencies facilitate talk about death. It is not grief therapy and won’t ask you to dwell on pain from your past\, although it will be an opportunity to share past experiences in a death positive context and most likely will be therapeutic. It will help you identify as an artist who works with themes of death and give you tools to talk about your work and to get involved with non-art professionals who also work with death. \nFind more details on our website.

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Reading\, Writing\, & Dancing with Death
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Death Collective & Darien Public Library welcome Amy Shea\, essayist and author of Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins (Rutgers University Press\, 2025). Inspired by the classic imagery of the dance with death (a memento mori) —artworks that depict skeletons leading people from every station of life into the grave—Amy will guide participants through writing prompts and exercises that open space for reflection and creativity. Attendees will generate their own short pieces of poetry or prose in response to the images\, using writing as a way to explore inequities in death and dying\, and to consider how art can help us give language to the unspoken. \nBooks for sale by Barrett Bookstore! \nPlus\, we’re collecting sock donations for Open Doors\, Norwalk!

SUMMARY:"It's Complicated" Support Group
DESCRIPTION:A monthly peer-led Zoom group for people who had a strained relationship with someone who’s died. It can be tough to be in a group with other folks who were close with their parent\, sibling\, grandparent\, partner\, co-parent\, friend\, etc. As much as I like for there to be a range of experiences represented in grief groups\, so that we can hear diverse perspectives\, sometimes it is nice to be with people who “get it.” When addiction\, mental health challenges\, conflict\, estrangement\, abuse\, etc. were a part of the picture\, it can affect the grief journey in unique ways. This is a space for us.
