SUMMARY:Book Club: What The Dead Know by Barbara Butcher
DESCRIPTION:What The Dead Know by Barbara Butcher Wednesday April 1st 5:00 – 6:00 PM (PT) 8-9 PM (ET) \nAbout the book:\nA “remarkably candid and sensitive” (The Wall Street Journal) true crime memoir from Barbara Butcher\, a trailblazing New York City death investigator\, who reveals the untold stories behind more than 5\,500 death scenes\, including the nation’s most horrific tragedy: the 9/11 attacks. \nWhen Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism\, she found an unexpected lifeline in a job at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in NYC. As only the second woman ever hired for the role—and the first to last more than three months—she became a vital force in the world of forensic science and criminal investigations. \nOver the next two decades\, Butcher worked thousands of cases: gruesome homicides\, suspicious suicides\, heartbreaking scenes involving underage victims\, and complex mass casualty investigations. In her unforgettable account\, she invites readers into the gritty\, high-stakes world of crime-scene investigation\, from the autopsy room and morgue to tense moments at active crime scenes. Along the way\, she uncovered how confronting death every day gave her a new perspective on life—and ultimately saved her from becoming a statistic herself. \nIn vivid\, darkly humorous prose\, Butcher recounts how she narrowly avoided a boobytrapped suicide scene\, and how\, during 9/11\, she and her colleagues worked tirelessly to identify victims using scraps of clothing\, DNA\, and the memories of grieving loved ones. Her honesty\, resilience\, and sharp wit make this a standout in the genre of first responder memoirs and women in law enforcement.

SUMMARY:Partial Scholarships Available For A Healing Doula Academy
DESCRIPTION:A message from the founder Sundari Malcolm… \nWe are living in a time of collective unraveling — war\, displacement\, climate grief\, fractured families\, and silent losses. Our systems are overwhelmed\, and many are dying without the sacred tending they deserve. This moment in history is calling ordinary people to become skillful guardians of grief — for their families\, their communities\, and the generations to come. Properly trained Grief & Death Doulas are not a luxury. They are needed now. \nFrank Hardeman was a teacher\, a forever student of ancient spiritual teachings\, and my father. He died in the spring of 2011 and I can think of no better way to lift up his name this season than by offering education. \nThe Academy is able to offer TWO PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS this Spring. \nEach recipient will receive:\n✨ Full access to the complete A Healing Doula Academy curriculum and workshops with incredible Guest Teachers\n✨ A one-on-one Mentorship Session with\, founder\, Sundari Malcolm\n✨ Lifetime access to all materials and resources \nThe Academy is entirely self-paced\, allowing students to move through the teachings in alignment with their own rhythm of healing and growth. \nApplication Due Date: March 25th\nRecipients Awarded: April 6th

SUMMARY:A Living Funeral Ceremony & Death Salon
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Spring returns for a Living Funeral Ceremony followed by a Death Salon. \nA Living Funeral Ceremony is an immersive meditative experience that encourages participants to face their own mortality. Through engaging in ritual and guidance through a death visualization\, participants are invited to “die before you die\, to live while you’re alive.” \nThis ceremonial experience provides a supportive space to confront fears around death and impermanence\, while also fostering a deeper connection to life’s fragility and beauty. Often compared to the experience of ego death\, this ritual leaves many with a renewed sense of purpose and a profound appreciation for the present moment.

SUMMARY:Empowered Choices™ Willow Workshop® Series
DESCRIPTION:Empowered Choices™ is a three-part Willow Workshop® series designed to help you navigate the emotional\, practical\, and legal aspects of end-of-life planning with courage\, clarity\, and compassion. Each session weaves together guided reflection\, writing\, and conversation to help you articulate your values\, express your wishes\, and communicate them with the people who matter most. \nMarch 17 Part 1: Exploring Health and Personal Care invites you to look inward—examining how your past experiences with illness\, death\, and grief shape your sense of dignity\, comfort\, and quality of life. You’ll begin articulating what matters most to you and create a foundation for meaningful advance care planning. \nMarch 24 Part 2: From Wishes to Advance Care Planning brings those reflections into action. You’ll learn about essential documents\, clarify who you trust to speak as you in times of incapacity\, and understand how to record your medical and personal-care preferences so your values guide your care. \nMarch 31 Part 3: Estate Planning and Meaningful Conversations completes the journey by helping you prepare your will and financial power of attorney\, choose the right representatives\, and cultivate the conversations that bring peace of mind and strengthen relationships. \nTogether\, these workshops transform a task many people avoid into a deeply human experience—one that honors both life and death as natural parts of your story. Step by step\, you’ll move from reflection to action\, creating plans rooted in love\, integrity\, and intentional living. \nIn this Series\, You Will:\n-Explore how your experiences\, beliefs\, and values shape your end-of-life wishes.\n-Clarify what dignity\, comfort\, and quality of life mean to you in times of illness or incapacity.\n-Learn about the key legal and non-legal documents that ensure your medical\, personal\, and financial wishes are respected.\n-Identify and prepare the people you trust to make decisions and carry out your affairs with clarity and care.\n-Engage in meaningful conversations that transform planning into connection\, easing emotional and practical burdens for everyone involved.\n-Move from reflection to action—leaving with practical next steps and a sense of peace\, knowing your plans align with your deepest values.

SUMMARY:Childfree By Choice & Grieving
DESCRIPTION:It’s not a given that everyone who is childfree by choice is 100%\, unabashedly content with the decision. While we may be set in our choice\, there can still be grief there. I know there is for me. It’s a both-and/two truths situation. Many of us make this choice for a lot of unfortunate\, depressing\, and/or systemic reasons\, and I created this space where we can be with our truths\, and hurts\, around it all. \nOur monthly peer-led Zoom group is intended to be a space for people who have chosen not to have children. It is not intended to be a child-loss support group or infertility support group\, although if you have prior experience with infertility and/or pregnancy loss and have since decided to not have children (meaning you are now childfree by choice) feel free to join and see if it’s a good fit.

SUMMARY:The Art of Grief Tending — Foundational Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Grief Tending is a 3-hour online experiential workshop for those who wish to understand grief better — their own grief or that of others — and learn ways to meet it with presence\, compassion\, and skill. \nIn a culture that often avoids grief\, pathologizes it\, or urges people to “move on\,” this workshop offers a grounded introduction to grief as a natural\, relational\, and lifelong response to loss — not something to “get over\,” but something to be tended in community and with care. \nThrough grief literacy teaching\, gentle somatic practices\, guided reflection\, and shared inquiry\, participants will explore: \n• What grief is (and isn’t)\, including common myths and cultural misunderstandings\n• How grief lives in the body and nervous system\n• Simple\, practical ways to support oneself through grief\n• The importance of witnessing grief\, ritual\, and relational support in healthy grieving \nThis workshop is suitable for anyone living with grief\, as well as caregivers\, community workers\, clinicians\, and those wanting to build grief literacy in their lives or work. \nNo prior experience is needed. You are welcome exactly as you are. \nTo attend\, please register on the event website.

SUMMARY:"It's Complicated" Support Group
DESCRIPTION:A monthly peer-led Zoom group for people who had a strained relationship with someone who’s died. It can be tough to be in a group with other folks who were close with their parent\, sibling\, grandparent\, partner\, co-parent\, friend\, etc. As much as I like for there to be a range of experiences represented in grief groups\, so that we can hear diverse perspectives\, sometimes it is nice to be with people who “get it.” When addiction\, mental health challenges\, conflict\, estrangement\, abuse\, etc. were a part of the picture\, it can affect the grief journey in unique ways. This is a space for us.

SUMMARY:Telling Stories: A Writing Workshop with author and death doula Darnell Lamont Walker
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER (AND GET MORE INFORMATION) HERE: \nhttps://www.panoramaburial.com/event-details-registration/telling-stories-a-writing-workshop \nTIME AND LOCATION \nMar 07\, 2026\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nPanorama Natural Burial\, 3550 Reas Ford Ln\, Earlysville\, VA 22936 \nABOUT THE EVENT \nWhat does it mean to tell our stories while we are still here and to be truly witnessed by another? \nIn this reflective workshop led by death doula and author Darnell Lamont Walker (Never Can Say Goodbye: The Life of a Death Doula and the Art of a Peaceful End)\, participants are invited to slow down and explore the power of storytelling as an act of presence\, remembrance\, and care. \nSet within the quiet\, natural landscape of Panorama Natural Burial\, this gathering will focus on three interconnected practices: telling our own stories\, learning how to bear witness to the stories of others\, and beginning to write in ways that feel honest\, accessible\, and alive. \nTogether\, we will explore: \nWhy our stories matter. Especially the unfinished\, imperfect\, and tender ones \nWhat it means to witness another person without trying to fix\, rush\, or reshape their truth \nHow storytelling can be a spiritual practice\, a form of legacy work\, and a way to soften our relationship with mortality \nGentle\, guided prompts to help participants begin writing their own stories\, regardless of experience \nThis workshop is not about polished writing or performance. It is about presence. About listening. About naming what we carry and offering it a place to land. \nWe will intentionally create a safe\, compassionate space for sharing. Participants will never be pressured to read aloud\, respond\, or disclose more than they wish. Confidentiality\, care\, and mutual respect will be held as shared agreements throughout our time together. \nPlease bring a pen and paper or a journal you feel comfortable writing in. All writing will happen by hand\, as a way to slow the body\, quiet the mind\, and stay connected to the moment. \nNo prior writing experience is required\, only a willingness to show up\, reflect\, and be in conversation with yourself and others. \nThis program is open to anyone curious about legacy\, memory\, grief\, meaning\, or the quiet courage it takes to tell the truth of our lives. \nThis event is part of an ongoing series of Death Fest programs\, co-hosted by Woven Roots Collective and Hospice of the Piedmont. \nAnd if you’d like to continue the fun\, join Darnell at 7pm at New Dominion Bookshop on the Downtown Mall for a reading and book talk of his new book Never Can Say Goodbye. \n+++ \nPlease note this event will take place in the barn at Panorama Natural Burial. Please dress for the weather!
