SUMMARY:Reclaiming Death - Art | Ritual | Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Ma’s House is pleased to present Reclaiming Death — Art | Ritual | Advocacy\, a group exhibition featuring 20 artists expressing personal and cultural connections to end-of-life practices. The exhibition will run from Sunday\, February 22—Sunday\, May 16\, 2026. \nDeath is one of life’s few universal experiences. As long as people are born\, people will die. And as long as people have died\, artists have played an integral role in creating cultural death practices. Our collective relationship to death and dying is inextricably tied to our humanity and mending that relationship directly impacts all we experience in life. “Reclaiming Death” is an ongoing pursuit of this mending which requires the communal effort of every participating artist and their unique approach to deathwork. \nNow in its 2nd iteration\, “Reclaiming Death” began as a research project by artist\, death doula\, and Ma’s House Director of Curation\, Brianna L. Hernández as part of Hyperallergic’s Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators. The series of online articles grew into an in-person exhibition at Ma’s House in 2024\, and most recently hosted an open call for the 2nd show and a printed publication\, available online and in-gallery.

SUMMARY:Telling Stories: A Writing Workshop with author and death doula Darnell Lamont Walker
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER (AND GET MORE INFORMATION) HERE: \nhttps://www.panoramaburial.com/event-details-registration/telling-stories-a-writing-workshop \nTIME AND LOCATION \nMar 07\, 2026\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nPanorama Natural Burial\, 3550 Reas Ford Ln\, Earlysville\, VA 22936 \nABOUT THE EVENT \nWhat does it mean to tell our stories while we are still here and to be truly witnessed by another? \nIn this reflective workshop led by death doula and author Darnell Lamont Walker (Never Can Say Goodbye: The Life of a Death Doula and the Art of a Peaceful End)\, participants are invited to slow down and explore the power of storytelling as an act of presence\, remembrance\, and care. \nSet within the quiet\, natural landscape of Panorama Natural Burial\, this gathering will focus on three interconnected practices: telling our own stories\, learning how to bear witness to the stories of others\, and beginning to write in ways that feel honest\, accessible\, and alive. \nTogether\, we will explore: \nWhy our stories matter. Especially the unfinished\, imperfect\, and tender ones \nWhat it means to witness another person without trying to fix\, rush\, or reshape their truth \nHow storytelling can be a spiritual practice\, a form of legacy work\, and a way to soften our relationship with mortality \nGentle\, guided prompts to help participants begin writing their own stories\, regardless of experience \nThis workshop is not about polished writing or performance. It is about presence. About listening. About naming what we carry and offering it a place to land. \nWe will intentionally create a safe\, compassionate space for sharing. Participants will never be pressured to read aloud\, respond\, or disclose more than they wish. Confidentiality\, care\, and mutual respect will be held as shared agreements throughout our time together. \nPlease bring a pen and paper or a journal you feel comfortable writing in. All writing will happen by hand\, as a way to slow the body\, quiet the mind\, and stay connected to the moment. \nNo prior writing experience is required\, only a willingness to show up\, reflect\, and be in conversation with yourself and others. \nThis program is open to anyone curious about legacy\, memory\, grief\, meaning\, or the quiet courage it takes to tell the truth of our lives. \nThis event is part of an ongoing series of Death Fest programs\, co-hosted by Woven Roots Collective and Hospice of the Piedmont. \nAnd if you’d like to continue the fun\, join Darnell at 7pm at New Dominion Bookshop on the Downtown Mall for a reading and book talk of his new book Never Can Say Goodbye. \n+++ \nPlease note this event will take place in the barn at Panorama Natural Burial. Please dress for the weather!
